NOTES:

Sir William Waller was the leading Parliamentary commander in southern England during the first three years of the Civil War. Only a month after these donations were made, and as a result of the Self-Denying Ordinance (which stipulated that no member of the House of Commons or the House of Lords could hold any command in the army or navy) he resigned his commission rather than lose his political influence.

Goring was Lieutenant-General of Horse in the King’s Army. Although at this time he was based at Winchester, on 15th January 1644/5, Goring's cavaliers attacked Christchurch, forcing 200 men in Major Philip Lower's garrison into the church, the castle, and Henry Hastings's house, Church Hatch.
