Errors in Burke's Peerage's Lineage of the Tapps Family Sir Peter Mews was categorically not the son of the Bishop, but rather his nephew. Sir Peter's father was Colonel John Mews, who fought for the other side in the Civil Wars. See the Wills of John Mellish and Sir Peter Mews. Richard Tapps married not Catherine, but her sister Elizabeth Jarvis. See the Wills of Richard Tapps and George Jarvis. There was but one George Jarvis Tapps - Burke has inserted an extra generation. The "J. Ivison" supposed to be Jane's father is more likely to have been her brother, John, a shoemaker who was co-executor of George Jarvis Tapps's Will. If Burke is not mistaken in stating that the family were from Carlisle, then John and Jane Ivison are likely to be the children of Francis Ivison and Mary Blakelock, baptised in 1715 and 1722 respectively at Stanwix, Carlisle. Timothy Buck had no daughter Mary, but he did marry Mary Tapps, sister of George Jarvis Tapps. See the Wills of Dame Lydia Mews and Richard Buck, and the Decree Clerke v. Biddulph. George Jarvis Tapps, who died in 1774, was not of Hinton Admiral but rather of North Church, Herts. None of the contemporary documents in this study use the variant "Gervis". See the Will of George Jarvis Tapps. George William Tapps was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1815. No record of George Jarvis Tapps has been found among the Lincoln's Inn registers, neither is George Jarvis Tapps associated with Lincoln's Inn in any of the documents in this study. Burke appears to have confused the two individuals. An article appeared in the September 1940 edition of Genealogists' Magazine entitled "Moonshine from Burke", which is indexed under "Tapps". Perhaps this will reveal more errors. |
